Open Questions: Science News Sites
|
There'a a lot going on in "science", but to judge from the
information available in most of our media you might never know it.
Except for the really big "breakthroughs", unless a story has some
"human interest" angle -- such as popular animals like whales, the
personality of the researcher, or some political controversy -- the
evening TV news and your local newspaper are likely to ignore it.
But the stories are out there. And they're even easier than ever to find.
Try some of the resources on this page as a regular source of
information about some of what's happening in the world that's a little
more interesting -- and useful -- to know about than the latest crime,
natural disaster, or political scandal story.
-
Science News Online
- Contains summaries of all stories and feature articles from
the weekly magazine plus tables of references, sources, and list
for further reading. Full text of news articles and some feature
articles is included. Has searchable
archives going
back to 1996. Full text of articles available for sale.
-
ScienceNOW
- Offers news articles on recent developments. Some articles are
available without a fee or subscription for four weeks after
publication. There is an
archive
of articles back to 1996.
ScienceNOW articles cover research news. There is a separate section
called
ScienceInsider that covers science policy news.
The most recent items from both news areas are available
here.
The site is associated with
Science magazine.
-
News@nature.com
- Good site with original news articles on topics with appeal
to a general audience, updated every week day.
There is an
archive,
but a large fee is charged for access to all but the most recent articles.
Articles can be accessed
by subject.
The site is associated with
Nature magazine.
-
PhysOrg.com
- Covers news in most areas of science and technology.
Articles are mostly based on press releases, but articles from
staff and free-lance writers are also included.
Past articles can be reached from
here,
or from the
archives.
There are specific categories for
Nano and Quantum Physics,
Technology,
Physics,
Space and Earth Science, and
General Science.
A topic directory and
archives are
also available.
There is a separate but related site for health & medical news:
Medical Express
(archive -
initial entries 4/4/11).
-
Science Daily
- Presents about 60 news articles every week day, based on
press releases from universities and other research organizations.
Past articles
are archived. There is a search facility and listing of articles
by subject category. Other features include a list of Usenet
science news groups.
The
Previous Day's Summaries is a good place to start.
There is also a science section on a related site called
News Daily, which carries UPI news stories. This site also
presents stories classified by
science and technology topics.
-
Brightsurf.com
- Presents about half a dozen science news articles based on
press releases every weekday. (Most of the press releases are
also available at
Science Daily.) Articles are
archived, searchable, and organized into detailed
categories by topic.
-
Wired News: Science
- Presents news from many areas of science and technology.
Quality of material has been rising in recent years. Striking
illustrations accompany most articles.
Associated with
Wired magazine.
-
Australian Broadcasting Corporation News in Science
- The Australian ABC is far superior to the (unrelated)
U. S. broadcasting network with the same initials. The science
news site has about
3 new articles per day, and a browsable, searchable
archive
dating back to 1998. There are subsections for
health & medicine,
environment & nature, and
space & astronomy.
There are also weekly
feature articles on a variety of subjects, and a diverse
directory
of news stories, feature articles, and broadcast transcripits
organized by topic.
The site has a nice
Ask an Expert
feature.
As with BBC news, there is no advertising. Individual stories
have references to related articles, but no external links.
Additional science/technology news stories are
here.
The network also provides transcripts of a broadcast program
on science topics, called
Catalyst.
-
Cosmos Magazine News
- Has one or two staff-written or wire-service news articles
each weekday.
Provided by the Australian
Cosmos Magazine.
-
USA Today Science Fair
- Daily news stories, usually of good quality, of significant
scientific research. There are
archives of past stories.
-
BBC News: Sci/Tech
- Current news stories related to science, technology, and
the environment. The stories are augmented with material such as
background information, discussions, and audio/video clips, as
well as links to related stories and external sites.
Only a day's worth of stories are listed on the main page,
but there is a search facility for older stories.
There are more stories at the
BBC World Service.
One of the best features of the site is the absence of
advertising. However, the writing style employed is annoyingly
simple-minded.
-
Journal of Sciences
- Aggregates articles from a variety of sources in the areas of
chemistry, electricity, energy technology, engineering, and
physics. Related to
Space Scientific.
-
Reuters Science News Headlines
- Coverage of science topics outside the medical area has
all but disappeared.
Bylined Reuters science news writers are pretty good, but most
articles are of only marginal scientific interest.
There is also a differently formatted page of the most recent science
articles
here.
You might also want to look at the page of
recent health articles, or the daily menus of
health news headlines.
There are similar
pages and
menus
for environment news.
-
National Geographic News
- News stories on customary National Geographic topics
from a variety of sources, updated weekdays. There's a separate
Science and Space section, but it doesn't include all the
science stories listed on the main page. And it also has,
unfortunately, an obnoxious excess of visual spam. But
the articles are good, if you can find them in all the clutter.
-
Sigma Xi Science in the News Daily
- A selection of occasionally interesting science news
stories from journalistic sources.
There is also a weekly
summary
here.
-
Scientific American News

by date and keyword search.
Articles may contain links to related stories.
Quality from this source has declined significantly in recent
years.
-
New Scientist News

or only of marginal value. No convenient archives, but allows
search for past articles. Some longer "feature" articles of
minor interest require a subscription.
-

- Has news coverage in the form of
blog articles. Best read via RSS feed.
-
LiveScience.com
- Low-quality science articles.
The main categories covered are biology, health & medicine,

physics and related areas is weak.
LiveScience news reports can also be found at
Yahoo.
-
Discovery News
- Fairly trashy stuff. Categories include
space,
tech
-
Seed Magazine News
- The focus of the magazine and news articles is on the "nexus of
science and culture". Not recommended as a news source; it's
mostly a collection of op-eds. Formerly had a news section, now

The archives are searchable by category, author, and date.
-
Sci-Tech Today

technology,
health,
computing,
space,
environment.
Many of the stories are from ordinary news agencies and are available

the articles by science editor and columnist
Tom Siegfried. No "registration" required for access.
-
Monsters and Critics: Science and Nature
- Respectable selection of current science/nature news.
-
The New York Times: Science
- Offers latest news stories every day. Registration is

month's articles archived. There is a special
Full Coverage section with news in a variety of specialized areas,
